.....The Radio Program with a Difference

When in 1964 I visited wonderful Hawaii I did not know that I met a great orchestra owned by Arthur Lyman. I was fascinated and could not stop thinking about the exotic sound. The orchestra played on the Beach outside our Hawaiian Hut near the hotel. It was evening and a thunderstorm neared. At the time I was working for Philips Music in Hamburg and I could not stop thinking that a recording of this orchestra would be a hit with 20 of their best titles. Somehow the recording was done but my favoured title Quiet Village which was at the time a World Hit sounded studio recorded not as lively as it was on the day I heard it live. The thunderstorm was missing and the atmosphere of the Hawaiian Beach.   At the time I was a rather seasoned recording specialist in my own rights and at the time I had a very high tech studio myself. This included two AEG -Telefunken Magnetophon studio machines M 3,  one Studer Revox recording machine, two Neumann and one AKG top of the range microphones and I did professional recordings beside my work at Philips.

I changed the existing original recording of Quiet Village and added the missing sound atmosphere to it. This included a rather powerful thunderstorm not recorded in Hawaii but in Hamburg. After so many years and moving around the world I lost many of my earlier recordings on 33 1/3 RMP but by chance I found the copy to CD in a second hand shop. I was fascinated when I heard the exotic sounds of Arthur Lyman again and after some working around with Quiet Village I tried to re-master it in the same fashion I did nearly 50 years ago. Digital it was rather easy compared to the very complex machinery in earlier times when one needed a driving license to drive the recording machines.
